New Single: Supernova

“I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own.” — Audre Lorde

1 out of 3 women have experienced sexual or physical violence in their lifetime. In the rising tide of the #metoo and #timesup movements, survivors are risking sharing their stories, many for the first time ever. Yet most people underestimate the pain and threat of speaking out, of having to relive the original trauma in the face of ridicule, shaming, victim-blaming or worse.

Today, on International Women’s Day, I am releasing a new song “Supernova” to honor the courage and bravery of those who identify as women, trans or non-binary who are coming forward. A supernova is an explosion of a massive supergiant star that shines with the brightness of 10 billion suns. The song shares the story of a woman who is almost killed from domestic violence and through that trauma, she realizes she is more powerful than she ever imagined. She finds a deep well inside of herself, that we all have, that can not only speak out against injustice and oppression but also find true healing.

“You can try to hurt me, but I am bigger than you ever imagined, and my inner strength is like the brightness of 10 billion suns.”

This song is dedicated to you:

You are not alone. Your voice matters. You are so powerful.

Supernova (Lyrics)

One summer evening, August 31st

Your anger swelled like a cloudburst

You hit me hard, this time the worst

I let out a hum, and became the Universe

You “I’ve had it”, I’d misbehaved

You made your move, destruction you craved

Thought you’d send me to my grave

But I became an interstellar shock wave

Your cages can’t contain me

Your blows no longer maim me

Your words cannot constrain me

I’m a Supernova

I’m a Supernova

Years ago, I’d tried to resist

But my weapon didn’t exist

My power needed a paradigm shift

I begged for mercy from the abyss

She said, “daughter, it’s ok to glow

Your fire’s just a dormant volcano”

Closed my eyes and just let go

Became a star from the shadow

Your cages can’t contain me

Your blows no longer maim me

Your words cannot constrain me

I’m a Supernova

I’m a Supernova

Thought I was small

Just your paper doll

You tried to hide me, trick me

Smother me, cover me

It was your downfall

It was your downfall….

Your cages can’t contain me

Your blows no longer maim me

Your words cannot constrain me

I’m a Supernova

I’m a Supernova
